question of the teaching of the Chinese language and
literature in the University and schools of Hong Kong

cult question. I feel convinced that we are not
adequately meeting the modern demand, and I am meeting
with a good deal of opposition to my view from some of
the old conservatives, both Chinese and English. It is
peculiarly difficult, of course, for me who have no
intimate knowledge of the Chinese language. I am, how-
ever, appointing a committee to go fully into the question
and make definite recommendations which will be considered
in due course by the Council and Court of the University.
Meanwhile we have already amended the syllabus for schools,
and an amended Matriculation syllabus will become effective
in 1932. This meets Resolution (a) passed by the Committee.
